Greetings from the depths of the DC Metro
The sound was the escalator coming up from the Metro station below Union Station in Washington DC. The down escalator was broken and the up escalator was making this lovely sound. A few months ago the power went off while I was on the escalator at Macy's and I was stuck there for two hours waiting for it to come back on. Fortunately this escalator continued running until we made it to the top.
No one managed to come up with the correct answer, but the terms of the contest were:
The first person to name the source of the noise recorded in the attached sound bite will win a prize.
Which says nothing about getting a correct answer. Bob Salnick, with his first answer submitted is the proud recipient of a Amtrak timetable that he can use to plan out his next trip.
