The Chehalis Farm

August 3rd, 2003

We took a trip down to Steve Hallstrom's farm near Chehalis today.

Snowball (brown) and Napoleon.

Snowball has the haunches to make good ham. Napoleon, longer, will be a good source of bacon.

The old dairy barn.

The old silo is good for stringing up the hops.

The dairy barn's roof needs a little work.

The starter greenhouse.

The irrigation and bed heating is all automatic.

Some big honkin' tomatoes.

The tomato greenhouse.

One of the vegetable gardens.

Looking back toward the house.

Cecilia maintains the marigolds.

Pausing for the camera.

Vegetables.

Steve surveys his river.

Looking west from the river to the greenhouses and the barn.

Lots of hawks and eagles searching for field mice.

The neighbor baled the hay on the back 40.

Heading toward the Chehalis.

Looking at an eagle.

Three of these shacks line the river. Steve lets the fishermen camp out here as they'll chase away the rest of the "vagrants".

Lots of skipping rocks on the river bank.

Freshwater mussels are a good conversation piece.

The row of trees bisecting the farm are part of the conservation zone.

The chicken wagon.

It can be wheeled around to give the chickens a fresh meal and distribute their fertilizer.

The ranch house.
